impacts of COVID-19 on IAWBH
March 24, 2020
As you’re aware, the global community is currently dealing with the impact of COVID-19. The Board has been closely monitoring this situation since February, and actively planning for a range of scenarios. In this complex and rapidly changing environment, the IAWBH Board has taken the difficult decision to postpone our 2020 conference, which was scheduled for June 8-12 in Dubai UAE.
This is a regrettable outcome, but we believe it is necessary to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of our members and delegates, while still enabling participation in the conference.
Revised Conference details
The conference will be postponed to March 2021.
The local organising committee (LOC) of the Dubai conference will make further information available about the postponed event as soon as possible. This will include revised dates for making further submissions, liaising with those who have already had papers accepted for the 2020 conference, and liaising with those who have already registered for the 2020 conference. Information will be available on the conference website and the LOC can be contacted via email at IAWBH2020@uowdubai.ac.ae
The postponement of any conference comes with disadvantages, but also with opportunities. For example, delegates will be able to submit additional papers, ensuring the most up to date work is presented from around the world. We anticipate that the conference will include the postgraduate student workshop, and incorporate opportunities for more interactive sessions during the parallel sessions.
The Board will also re-open the application for student scholarships to attend the conference.
The General Assembly
The General Assembly of the IAWBH usually occurs at our biennial conference. It is an important meeting at which newly elected Board members are installed, and the Board reports on its progress. It is an important opportunity for members to influence the direction, growth and governance of the Association.
Accordingly, the Board is investigating arrangements for holding a virtual general assembly in June 2020. Further details of this will be made available as soon as possible.
We will endeavour to provide as much information as early as possible, in order to facilitate this event. Please remember there are still many uncertainties, and factors at play beyond our control.
We will be compiling and publishing a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), so please get in touch with your questions.
I’d like to thank the LOC for their commitment, hard work and flexibility to ensure the re-scheduling of this conference. I’m sure it is still going to be an event not to be missed.
I hope that you and your families are safe and well – it is an uncertain and distressing time globally. I look forward to us all being able to meet together once again.
